On Wednesday night I started my first rehearsal with the Murray Symphony. I have not been in an orchestra since high school and thought that joining one would be really fun help enhance my cello skills. Since this is a super busy semester for Scott I thought this was a great time to join to give me something to do and give him some study time while I'm at rehearsals. I did some research to find a good orchestra and found the Murray Symphony online and was excited to check it out. Rehearsals are close to home, its all volunteer so there were no tryouts, the conductor has TONS of experience, and best of all there are no dues. Hooray!
As the rehearsal was rapidly approaching I was getting excited but also VERY nervous about being in an orchestra again since I have been out of the loop for several years. I was hoping I would be able keep up but knew I would learn a lot. I was also excited for the other members to find out that I am truly a one of a kind cello player because I play backwards. I debated between telling the members right away or letting them figure it out. Scott and I joked about getting a glove with fingers and just wait and see if they told me I was playing my cello wrong. Sometimes I actually like to wait until people notice that I'm missing fingers and let them wonder. Its actually quite amusing to let them squirm a little wondering if they should ask about it. It is so funny! It's good to be one of a kind right?
I showed up to rehearsals Wednesday night and nervously started getting my cello ready. As I met the other cellists I decided to tell them about my backwards cello skills and as always it created a pretty good shock. They all were so great about it and I was able to sit on the outside so my bow didn't run into too many people. It turned out to be really fun and best of all, I totally kept up. Scott was so encouraging saying I would do great and he was so excited to hear afterwards that I kept up and felt good about it. I'm excited for this new adventure doing something I love!
Next Goal: Try out for the Orchestra on Temple Square someday!

that is so awesome! I miss orchestra a lot. Way to keep up your skills!
Katie,
That is cool you are playing with the Murray Symphony. My dad played in that symphony for several years when I was very little. I remember going to many of their concerts. I hope you enjoy it.
